Smart Guys Drive Subaru

How Ronald Reagan Became A Secret Subaru Test Driver

In Ronald Reagan's day, it wasn't smart for an American politician to be seen in a Japanese vehicle, but the soon-to-be-President quietly kept a quirky Subaru BRAT at his ranch in California under an agreement that the automaker would get progress reports from Reagan on the little truck's performance. Read about how this strange arrangement came to be in this report from Benjamin Preston exclusively for Jalopnik ?Ed.

Subaru BRATs are cool, if somewhat quirky cars. Adapting the popular Subaru station wagon in 1978, Japanese engineers managed to smear a dollop of pickup truck utility onto a small car platform powered by a 67-hp flat four.

The odd little proto-SUV caught the eye of one of President Ronald Reagan's advisers that same year, not long before Reagan made his second presidential run. Richard V. Allen, a Japan expert who served as Reagan's National Security Advisor for a short time after the Gipper took over the White House in 1981, arranged through one of his contacts at Fuji Heavy Industries (the company of which Subaru is a subsidiary) for the car to be given to the then former California governor and failed 1976 presidential candidate.

The BRAT's circuitous entry into the U.S. market began a bit earlier, as Subaru devised a way around the "Chicken War" tariff ? the residue of a Johnson-era trade dispute with West Germany that, to this day, levies a 25 percent tax on imported light trucks (for example, you may have noticed that the Turkish-assembled Ford Transit Connect undergoes a strange, and some would say wasteful, transformation when it lands on American shores). Subaru's solution was simple. The company installed a pair of plastic jump seats in the bed of each truck, instantly morphing it ? in a regulatory sense, anyway ? into a passenger vehicle.

Allen got word that BRATs were being tested to destruction at a proving ground in the desert somewhere out west. He said his Fuji contact told him they were having trouble destroying the jump-seated warriors.

"I said, 'I have a friend with a ranch. You could give him one of the destructed ones and see how much longer he could use it,'" Allen recalls.

That's how a Subaru BRAT ended up at Reagan's ranch in the mountains west of Santa Barbara, Calif. (after being sprayed with a fresh coat of fire engine red paint). The only condition Subaru had was that the car's new owner file a report on its performance every six months, making Reagan a test driver of sorts for the company.

Rancho del Cielo was (and still is) an apt home for the BRAT, and for a time, Reagan was a big fan of the diminutive sport ute.

"It was a tough little dude on the ranch and Reagan loved it," Allen says.

But in 1980, a time when Japanese automakers were mopping Detroit's detritus from the factory floor, it was, among Reagan's crowd of campaign advisers, considered a political faux pas for the presidential hopeful to be seen in a Japanese car. That's why you'll never see pictures of a smiling Ronnie loading brush and fence posts into the BRAT's little bed (pictures of him smiling and doing ranch activities in other settings are plentiful).

"At the time, members of Congress were putting Japanese cars on the steps of the Capitol and smashing them with sledgehammers," says Allen, who had owned a Japanese car himself since 1971, but realized that for his boss, leaking such a fact to the press could be the presidential candidate's undoing.

Even after his presidency, Reagan spent a great deal of his time away from the Western White House ? often at his home in Bel Aire, Calif. But the ranch caretaker, Lee Clearwater, and a pair of retired California Highway Patrol officers (one of whom, Barney Barnett, held the BRAT's title and filed its semiannual performance reports after the 1980 presidential race) used the presidentially jilted BRAT for ranch work and supply runs down the mountain into Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley. (The ranch, a collection of modest buildings and wooded hills, sits on a stunning 688-acre chunk of property straddling the mountains separating Santa Barbara County's south coast from its wine country.)

When the Young America's Foundation, a conservative student organization, bought the ranch to preserve the altar of Reaganism in 1998, the presidential Subaru was gone, having been transferred to someone else's ownership a year earlier. In 2003, the BRAT resurfaced on eBay, only to be snatched up by a gentleman in Georgia. YAF bought it from him a year later for an undisclosed amount. It was in rough shape after years of use as a ranch vehicle, but Allen stepped in again to arrange, through Subaru of America, a complete restoration.

As the years go by, BRATs are less and less common a sight, so good luck finding one that hasn't been thrashed to within an inch of being sent to the junk pile. The one sitting quietly in the tack shed at Rancho del Cielo might as well be brand new. Its interior vinyl has a refreshed new car smell, its engine and undercarriage are spotless and its white powder coated steel wagon wheels gleam beneath the California sun.

YAF leads tours of the ranch, so it's possible to see the BRAT, along with a host of other Ronnie memorabilia. Tours begin at the organization's headquarters in downtown Santa Barbara. There you will watch a video depicting Democratic presidents alongside images of economic woe and wounded American pride, and corresponding footage of Ronald Reagan bringing morning to America. You will also learn how the free world conquered communism, and look upon dozens of smiling portraits of the Gipper before being whisked off to the ranch in a Chevy Suburban.

YAF staffers say that Reagan spent a lot of time in Rancho del Cieolo's tack shed preparing for horseback rides and fence building expeditions. These days, the shed is silent, save when caretaker George Thompson comes in, making sure its contents are immaculate. Whether or not you're a fan of the departed 40th president, a trip up to his ranch is a worthwhile experience. Where else can you see a perfect BRAT on an even more perfect slice of coastal California mountaintop?

2013 Subaru BRZ Finally Lands in America: 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Although the concept version of Subaru's rear-drive BRZ, displayed at the 2011 LA Auto Show back in November, looked close to production ready, we've now seen the real thing, which made it's North American Debut this week at the Detroit Auto Show.

Powered by new generation FA-Series 2.0-liter Boxer four-cylinder, generating 200 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, the production BRZ boasts one of the lowest centers of gravity of any car in the world and is also among the lightest two-door coupes on the market, weighing in at a relatively bantam 2,762 lbs. That makes it some 300 lbs less than the Lotus Evora and a whopping 500 lbs less than the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

With a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions (the latter with sport and manual paddle shifts), plus pedals optimized for heel and toe downshifting, along with an optimized front strut suspension and independent rear, the BRZ promises to be one of the most fun to drive cars available in American when it goes on sale as a 2013 model.

Subaru of America, Inc Reports 2011 for All-Time Record Sales!!

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan 4, 2012 ? Subaru of America, Inc. today reported record vehicle sales
for 2011 of 266,989. Subaru has now posted sales records in each of the past three years and
Subaru is the only manufacturer in the US to have posted four successive years of sales
growth.

The December sales total also marks Subaru's best-ever sales month, eclipsing the previous
best month of August 2009 ? the "Cash for Clunkers" month.

The 2011 achievement for Subaru is all the more remarkable considering the company had to
contend with significant production delays caused by the tsunami and earthquake in Japan in
March 2011. To respond to strong consumer demand for its latest products, and to make up
for lost production, Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries increased vehicle
manufacture in the second half of 2011 and the company is now producing more cars per month
than at any time in its history.

Demand for the Subaru Legacy, Outback and Forester models continued to be strong in 2011
with Legacy and Outback setting individual records. The all-new 36 mpg Impreza began retail

sales in November, boosting sales still further. With consumer demand so high, the company
predicts a fourth record year in 2012 with sales likely to reach the milestone 300,000 mark.

Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc said; "We are
thrilled to close 2011 with a third consecutive sales record for Subaru. We need to thank our
retailers, distributors, our employees and of course the dedication and commitment of Fuji
Heavy Industries staff for making these results possible. 2011 was the best year in our history,
but with our production levels now running at their highest ever, and our best ever line-up in
place, we are committed to another record-setting year in 2012."

"We are very pleased to welcome the 266,989 customers to the Subaru family" said Bill
Cyphers, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. "With production now catching
up to demand, our December sales show the potential for the Subaru brand for 2012. We
delivered 34,000 cars in to dealers in December, beating our previous highest total by 5,000.
Given how quickly our products are moving, we expect to reach another significant sales
milestone in 2012".

Announcing the Winners fo the 2011 Top Safety Pick Awards

Iihs

The list of winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award is longer than ever this year, with vehicles in nearly every size category the Institute evaluates earning accolades. From minicars to sedans to pickups, consumers have a record number of choices among 2012 models.

In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, 5 minivans, and 3 pickups earn Top Safety Pick. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute evaluations. The ratings, which cover all 4 of the most common kinds of crashes, help shoppers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection. Because the federal government now requires all 2012 and later passenger vehicles to have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid loss-of-control crashes, ESC no longer is a requirement to win as it was in prior years.

The winners' circle includes 18 new recipients for 2012, while 97 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012.

"For the second year running a record number of models qualify," says Institute president Adrian Lund. "It's tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority."

That commitment to protecting people in crashes is evident in the fast pace of design improvements automakers have made during the past year. Initially 66 vehicles qualified for last year's award as less-than-perfect rollover ratings held back many contenders. Later the number climbed to 100 as manufacturers redesigned roofs to make them stronger or introduced new models to win. The Institute's rolling test schedule allows for recognition of additional winners throughout the year, so many 2012 models qualified for a 2011 Top Safety Pick.

Again this year every major automaker has at least one winner. Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Subaru picks up 5 awards, including one for the redesigned Impreza, a small car.

Toyota/Lexus/Scion has 15 winners for 2012, more than any other auto manufacturer. General Motors is next in line with 14, followed by Volkswagen/Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura with 12 awards apiece.

Honda improves: Ten of the 18 new additions are Honda/Acura models, including the midsize Accord sedan, which hasn't earned Top Safety Pick since the Institute toughened criteria to win the 2010 award by adding a test to assess roof strength in a rollover crash.

Vehicles rated good for rollover protection have roofs more than twice as strong as the current federal standard requires. The Institute estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 percent compared with roofs meeting the minimum requirement. A new federal standard for roof strength will phase in beginning with 2013 models.

Roofs on the 2009 Honda CR-V and 2010 Pilot scored marginal ratings in prior Institute tests, while earlier models of the Accord, CR-Z, Fit, and Insight rated acceptable. Now all of these 2012 models earn good ratings and Top Safety Pick.

"Honda/Acura deserves credit for most-improved status," Lund says. "The automaker buckled down and upgraded roofs on 10 models that missed winning last year because of rollover protection. Now, the automaker has winners in the minicar, small car, midsize car, small SUV, midsize SUV, minivan, and large pickup categories."

Another midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry, earns its first-ever Top Safety Pick. Last year, the Camry missed the mark because of a marginal rating for seat/head restraints. The Toyota Yaris also earns its first Top Safety Pick award. Toyota upgraded the roof and seat/head restraints of the 4-door hatchback model to win. Good ratings secure the Yaris a spot alongside 3 other minicars, the Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta, and Honda Fit, as 2012 winners.

"It's great to see the Accord and Camry, 2 of the top-selling midsize cars in the U.S. market, join the Top Safety Pick ranks this year," Lund says. "The Accord previously won the 2009 award but has been missing from the list since then."

With fuel efficiency and reduced emissions on many buyers' wish lists, the winners' circle includes more green choices. Toyota's all-new Prius v is among them. Roomier than the original, the v hybrid brings to 15 the number of winners available as hybrids. The plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, winners in 2011, also earn this year's award.

For drivers who need to haul loads, the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline, and Toyota Tundra are good choices in the large pickup category. Small pickups continue to be shut out. None the Institute has evaluated qualify for the award.

"When we launched Top Safety Pick in 2005, consumers had 11 models to pick from. Six years later, finding a winner that fits most budgets and lifestyles is easy," Lund says. "It's a testament to the commitment automakers have made to going above and beyond minimum safety standards."

About the award: The Institute awarded the first Top Safety Pick to 2006 models and then raised the bar the next year by requiring good rear test results and ESC as either standard or optional equipment. In 2010, the Institute toughened criteria by adding a requirement that all qualifiers must earn a good rating for performance in a roof strength test to assess protection in a rollover crash.

The Institute groups winners according to vehicle type and size. Lund advises consumers to keep in mind that size and weight influence crashworthiness. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford better occupant protection in serious crashes than smaller, lighter ones. Even with a Top Safety Pick, a small car isn't as crashworthy as a bigger one.

How vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a 50th percentile male Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a 5th percentile woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact.

In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a displacement rate of 0.2 inch per second. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a 2-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry ? the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man.

Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

Subaru Forester

Control the Road with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

You need balance and an even distribution of power for maximum traction, instead of the slip-then-grip alternative. Every Subaru comes standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for better stability, efficiency and a quicker response to slippery conditions.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive standard on:
All Subaru Models

Efficiency and Durability

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive has the engine mounted in-line with the drivetrain, helping provide a seamless transfer of power to all four wheels.

Other AWD systems need additional drivetrain components to route the same power to the wheels, often using complex designs. More components tend to reduce vehicle efficiency and could add to higher maintenance costs.

Stability and Control

The balanced design of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive helps add control through uniform stability. With power being distributed to the wheels with the best traction, it helps you hold true to the path.

Front-wheel drive vehicles generally understeer or push in a turn, while rear-wheel drive vehicles can often oversteer in a turn.

Power and Traction

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive sends power to all wheels simultaneously for maximum traction and acceleration.

In slippery conditions, that power instinctively flows to the wheels with the best traction.

Subaru WRX STI S206 to Tokyo

Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI)*1 is pleased to announce the launch of the SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI "S206", special performance edition. The model will go on sale today through Subaru dealerships in Japan.

Based on the 4-door SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI, S206 is the newest model in STI's "S" series. This series dons the crown of STI tuned cars with advanced driving performance and exclusively-made items in both interior and exterior designs. As with former STI models such as S204 and R205, S206 is founded on the IMPREZA WRX STI line.

In addition, "NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE" model will be released to commemorate the class win*2 at 24 Hours Nürburgring endurance race held in June, with the addition of a carbon roof and original dry carbon rear spoiler. The exterior design incorporates racing car motifs and has an enhanced sporty feel.

Pre-orders for the "NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE" have reached the limit for units available.

SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI S206

S206's body and engine were tuned to perform as expected of STI's best model. The body employs exclusive Bilstein shock absorbers, STI coil springs, a flexible tower bar (front), and a flexible draw stiffener (front). While improving straight-driving performance, motion is steadied when going into corners so that precise and quick turning is possible. Plus, "Michelin Pilot Super Sport" tires provide refined driving comfort in combination with
"BBS" 19-inch aluminum wheels made only for this model.

In the exclusively-made engine, the weight balance between piston, connecting rod, and crankshaft is optimized to enhance the rev feel. Along with a ball bearing turbocharger, ECU (Engine Control Unit) with STI tuning, and a sports muffler with lowered back pressure exhaust - all of which were designed for this model - the engine can deliver 235kW (320PS) in maximum output and 431N.m (44kg.m) in maximum torque. The accelerator response is heightened and low to mid range torque increased, thereby offering better driveability.

On the outside, the lower front spoiler and front fender outlet grille, both designed for this model, and the trunk spoiler are among its distinctive features. The newly-made front grille and side garnishes were also employed for aerodynamics improvement and a high grade appearance.

In the interior are exclusively-made items such as a genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel, "RECARO" racing bucket seats, and seatbelts. Together they create a refined appearance and feel, appropriate for this flagship model.

Subaru Redefines The Hybrid

Just the Facts:
  • Subaru hints at the future with its sensational hybrid wagon concept.
  • The Advanced Tourer Concept is an update of the 2009 Hybrid Tourer Concept.
  • The Advanced Tourer mates an electric motor with a turbocharged 1.6 direct-injection boxer engine.

TOKYO ? Forget about the scissors-style front doors, the rear suicide doors and the all-glass panoramic roof. Subaru's Advanced Tourer Concept, unveiled here at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show, is one hot-looking wagon that just might make it into production in 2014, without a few of the more eye-popping design details.

An update of Subaru's 2009 Hybrid Tourer Concept, the Advanced Tourer is sized between the Impreza and Outback wagons, with cutting-edge styling that is likely to spill over into the automaker's next crop of production cars.

Subaru said the concept was developed as a "new-generation sports wagon" under the theme Revolutionary Sports Tourer. Overall length is 180.3 inches, which makes the Advanced Tourer more than 6 inches longer than an Impreza wagon and 8 inches shorter than an Outback.

The revolutionary aspect may allude to the choice of driveline ? an advanced hybrid system that combines an electric motor and a new turbocharged 1.6-liter version of Subaru's direct-injection four-cylinder boxer engine. Look for a production version of the hybrid powertrain to appear in other Subaru cars in 2013.

The concept also features all-wheel drive and Subaru's new Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, which the company describes as the world's first longitudinally mounted chain-drive CVT to be used in mass-produced AWD passenger cars.

Powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and linked to a brake regeneration system, the electric motor can be used exclusively during takeoff and at low speeds.

Other features include a monitor built into the steering wheel that enables access to navigation, video and Web-based apps, as well as an updated version of Subaru's EyeSight video warning system.

Whats New for the Subaru 2012 Lineup? Funny you should ask... Let's review.

What's New for 2012: All Makes

2012 Subaru Forester: After adding a new engine with more power and better fuel economy last year, changes to the Forester are minimal for 2012. There's a new height-adjustable passenger seat as well as a new optional navigation system on 2.5 X Limited and Touring and 2.5 XT Touring models. The navigation package includes a navigation system, rearview camera, HD radio, Bluetooth, iPod control, iTunes tagging, SMS text messaging capability, XM Satellite Radio and more.

2012 Subaru Impreza: All new and fully redesigned for 2012, base Imprezas offer sedan and five-door body styles as well as more interior room and better fuel economy from a new 2.0-liter boxer engine (27 city/36 highway mpg). Improved fuel economy is due in part to a new continuously variable transmission available on Premium, Limited and Sport Limited models. All-wheel drive is, of course, standard.

The Impreza Outback Sport has been eliminated for 2012.

2012 Subaru Impreza WRX: The WRX remains on the current Impreza platform with minor exterior changes. Premium and Limited models offer a new navigation system.

2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI: The STI remains on the current Impreza platform and offers new 18-inch wheels on four-door models plus minor exterior changes. A new navigation system is available on all WRX STI models.

2012 Subaru Legacy: Several additions are included in the Premium package for the 2012 Legacy. An upgraded audio system including Bluetooth, satellite radio and iPod controls is standard. Also, there's a new optional Harman Kardon display-type audio system with a 4.3-inch screen, iTunes tagging, satellite radio and nine speakers. Bluetooth switches on the steering wheel are standard on Premium models. Foglights are now standard on Limited models.

2012 Subaru Outback: Outbacks will get the same audio changes as the Legacy in 2012; an upgraded audio system includes Bluetooth, satellite radio and iPod controls. Also, there's a new optional Harman Kardon display-type audio system with a 4.3-inch screen, iTunes tagging, satellite radio and nine speakers. Bluetooth switches on the steering wheel are standard on Premium models. There's also a revised roof crossbar design.

2012 Subaru Tribeca: The only change to the Tribeca for 2012 is a revised head restraint design.

Post Quake Planning Underway

Subaru's Boss Lays Groundwork for Big Post-Quake Recovery

How many U.S. dealers do you have now, and how many do you want?
YASUYUKI YOSHINAGA: We have about 620 dealers in the United States. The biggest thing recently is improving the quality of the dealerships themselves. We are not planning to increase the number of dealerships.

Japan's March 11 earthquake threw Subaru off its U.S. sales pace that has beaten the market for the past three years. Sales were up 1 percent through September despite prolonged factory shutdowns and parts bottlenecks. But Subaru trailed an industry that had advanced 10 percent.

Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, appointed president of Subaru parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. in May, took the helm at a challenging time. He had to oversee Subaru's recovery from the quake while gearing up for a new midterm business plan that was unveiled in July.

Yoshinaga's agenda for the next five years is ambitious: Boost global sales to 900,000 units by 2016, lift U.S. sales to 350,000 and roll out new products to expand Subaru's customer base, including the XV small crossover, the BRZ sporty car and Subaru's first hybrid.

Improving fuel efficiency also will be a key challenge for the SUV and all-wheel-drive specialist.

Yoshinaga, 57, spoke through an interpreter with Asia Editor Hans Greimel on Oct. 3 at Fuji Heavy's Tokyo headquarters about Subaru's rapid growth, production plans and new products.

Q: What is your outlook for the economy and overall auto sales in the United States?

A: First of all, we are worried that the U.S. economy seems to be weakening. Overall demand in the U.S. market was estimated at 13 million units when we announced our new midterm business plan in July. But since then that number is headed lower.

What is the outlook for Subaru's sales?

We are a niche company. So compared with major players, the overall economic impact is slightly lower for us. We still have strong momentum, but Japan suffered from the March 11 earthquake and our supply is getting tight.

Subaru's sales have outpaced the U.S. market in recent years, but they were up only 1 percent through August, trailing the industry. How many sales do you expect this year?

Last year we achieved over 260,000, and for this year we are trying to achieve almost the same level. With regard to next year, we are launching new models so we hope we can get a number close to 300,000.

Under your new midterm business plan, you expect to sell 350,000 vehicles in the United States by 2016. How will you meet that goal?

First of all, if we had enough inventory we could probably exceed 300,000 this year. So considering that momentum, I don't think 350,000 is such a faraway target.

Can Subaru return to double-digit growth next year?

Next year, we are launching a new Impreza, so we expect sales to increase. Next year, we hope we can achieve close to 300,000 units, so that means more than a 10 percent increase.

Maybe 350,000 units by 2016 is too conservative?

I think it's a good target. Under our midterm plan, we are planning full model changes for every model -- one a year -- so there will be sales increases there. And in addition to existing models, we will be adding new models like the XV and BRZ. So we expect to expand our customer base through these new models.

And your current lack of inventory is due to production disruptions from the Japan earthquake?

That's correct.

What production bottlenecks does Subaru still face from the earthquake?

We expect we can return to full capacity from October at the Yajima plant in Japan. Inventory is its lowest in September-October because we need lead time to fill the pipeline after restarting full production. Automotive News was reporting a while back we have only 19 days' supply. It's a little more now, around 22 or 23.

Also, the SIA plant in Indiana already returned to full production in September. We are now filling out the pipeline of the Outback and Legacy from that factory. So this will help push up sales in the United States, though there may be some shortfalls of the Impreza or Forester.

What inventory level do you want?

People say 60 days is the normal level of supply. But Subaru is usually kept lower than that, around 50 days.

How long will it take to get back to 50?

By the end of March.

How much more production capacity does Subaru need to reach your midterm target of 900,000 global sales by 2016?

We are planning to expand global production capacity from 620,000 units today to 820,000 units. But we receive about 80,000 units of minicars on an OEM basis in Japan. So add that, and sales reach 900,000. Our production in Japan will be increased from 460,000 to 500,000 units.

Overseas we have 160,000 units, all in the United States. But we will increase overseas capacity to 320,000 by 2016. That means 170,000 in the United States and 150,000 in China.

How much Japanese production do you plan to shift to the United States over that period to offset foreign exchange losses?

The 170,000 figure for the United States represents full capacity at SIA. We don't want to say we have no plans to produce the Impreza or Forester overseas. We have the land there, but to produce over 170,000 at SIA, we would need to expand with a new factory.

Our midterm business plan is based on 90 yen to the dollar. But if the yen's exchange rate continues at the current level around 76 yen to the dollar, then we will have to think about that question.

At SIA, you also produce about 100,000 Camry sedans for Toyota, on top of the 170,000 units for Subaru. Can you trim Camry output to increase Subaru output?

There is no plan to decrease the Camry and increase Subaru production. It is very important for Subaru's business to keep full capacity of 100,000 units on the Toyota side. The original capacity of SIA was 200,000 per year: 100,000 for Subaru and 100,000 for Isuzu. When Isuzu left the venture, it was difficult for Subaru to keep the factory running. But after that, Toyota stepped in to accept 100,000 units. That means they own half the fixed costs at SIA. In the meantime, Subaru expanded our capacity from 100,000 to 170,000. Therefore, SIA became very profitable.

What are some trends in your upcoming product?

We are going to introduce two new models. One is the XV, an Impreza derivative. And the other is the BRZ, which is being jointly developed with Toyota. There are two overall market trends. One is downsizing. The other is that the SUV market is growing. The new XV will meet both of these trends, demand for downsizing and SUVs.

Will there be a next generation Tribeca SUV?

We are still studying what we should do for that model. At this moment there is no clear plan.

What is your goal for fuel efficiency improvement?

Our goal is to improve fleet fuel economy by 30 percent [by 2016]. There are several technologies here. Firstly, we introduced a new boxer engine last year. So along with the continuously variable transmission, that improves fuel economy by about 10 percent. And we are also going to introduce several other technologies, including a hybrid vehicle. By having all these technologies we are going to achieve a 30 percent improvement in fuel economy.

Boston Overdrive Highlights 2012 Subaru Impreza

NEW YORK?Subaru is a manufacturer near and dear to New England's heart. It's almost as if they were designed solely for this region. As the old joke goes, the Subaru is the state bird of New Hampshire.

Quick spin

Fans ? mostly New Englanders and anyone in the snow belt ? have loved them for their distinctive design and tough all-wheel-drive systems, but in recent years Subaru has begun to homogenize its cars to make them more appealing to the rest of the country. Case in point: The 2012 Subaru Impreza.

At its launch to the media in Manhattan last month, company executives said the previous generation model was, to paraphrase, ugly. And like all Subarus, it consumed gas at a horrible rate for a small car.

2012-Subaru-Impreza-rear.jpg

Click photo for larger version.

Let's address the latter point first. The 2012 Subaru Impreza, now in its fourth generation, gets the new 2.0-liter Boxer engine (the cylinders fire horizontally, unlike the upright design of an inline or "V" layout) that debuted in the 2011 Subaru Forester. It features a longer stroke, double overhead camshafts, and dual active valve control system for efficient performance and low emissions.

All that translates into an EPA-rated 27-mpg city and 36-mpg highway rating when equipped with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). For comparison's sake, the 2011 model with the 2.5-liter engine was pegged at 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway with its four-speed automatic.

In spite of a smaller gas tank, the highway cruising range for new Impreza is 523 miles, up 67 miles from the 2011 Impreza,. That gives the current Impreza a better range than the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, Mazda 3 and Hyundai Elantra ? none of which offer all-wheel-drive.

The 2011 Impreza, however, had a bigger engine with more power. The previous model had 170 horsepower and 170 lb.-ft. of torque compared to the new Impreza's 148 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque from its smaller engine. Yet the new car is a half-second faster from 0-60 mph with the CVT.

It's still not right to use the word fast and Impreza in the same breath (that 0-60 time is 9.8 seconds, barely quicker than a Prius), but the new transmission provides the smoothest acceleration of any CVT I've tested under hard acceleration. Like any CVT, though, it can get caught looking for shifts under certain conditions like hilly terrain. It's not a deal breaker but it is noticeable.

Two different versions of Subaru's standard all-wheel-drive are available, depending on transmission. Models with 5-speed manuals feature "Continuous AWD" with a viscous-coupling locking center differential that splits power 50/50 front to rear. Models with the CVT use "Active AWD" which varies the power split based on acceleration, deceleration, and available traction. Both systems power four wheels at all times.

Subaru let automotive journalists flog the Impreza over 250 miles in three states, including a stop at Camp Hi-Rock in Mount Washington, Mass., which had an impressive, twisty gravel road that just made you want to throw the rear end sideways. Fortunately, the all-wheel-drive and electronic stability control stepped in at the right time.

2012-Subaru-Impreza-interior-full.jpg

Click photo for larger version.

The 2012 Impreza is also a good highway cruiser and adept at local roads, too. Improvements in the thinner A-pillar design, which has been moved forward eight inches, make visibility impressive. There's no sense of sitting in an enclosed bathtub like with previous Imprezas.

Other design improvements include a shorter hood and a wheelbase that is one inch longer. That and the scalloped front seats add two extra inches of rear legroom. The door openings are also wider for easier entry and exit, as well as making it simpler to load bulky cargo in the backseat. The shoulder line has also been lowered for better visibility. Most rewarding are the interior materials, upgraded with more padded surfaces on the dashboard and less cheap plastic.

When the new Impreza goes on sale next month, it'll start at the same base price as the current model's $17,495. The next most expensive Impreza is the 2.0 Premium at $18,795, which is $710 less than a Honda Civic EX. The hatchback in the top-end Limited trim starts at $22,595.

C'mon winter, throw us your best shot. The Impreza's ready to take you on.

Subaru explains the Vehicle Dynamics Control System

(Lateral slip prevention)

The driver's driving habits are detected from the steering angle, engine speed, selected gear and braking conditions to constantly calculate the best driving mode for the vehicle. Actual driving conditions are monitored by each sensor. This electronic control system takes this information to constantly and automatically optimise traction and stability with a computer. Torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is optimised, torque distribution between left and right wheels is controlled when braking, and engine output also controlled in a flash, without hindering the sporty driving required by the driver, all to maintain a safe level of driving.

Subaru Plans to Increase Gas Mileage by 30%

Subaru plans product, technology blitz in mpg hunt

Goal is to boost fuel efficiency 30% by 2015

Read more: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20111010/OEM01/310109978/1117#ixzz1aa7zRjhl

Subaru has been on a roll in the U.S. Sales rose 22% in 2010 compared with the previous year. And through the first two months of 2011, sales are tracking 20% higher, outselling brands like Chrysler and Mazda.

Rising gas prices ? the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.52, according to AAA ? could shift consumers' attention back to fuel efficiency and the smaller cars that deliver it, but Subaru points to its bigger car lineup for its sales success.

Car shoppers thought the automaker's previous Legacy sedan and Forester crossover were too small, said Michael McHale, Subaru's director of corporate communications. Recent redesigns have made both models larger, adding appreciable interior room. McHale also credits some of the success to a reorganization of its U.S. sales regions. "[The change] means we're a bit more in touch with the market," he said.

Fuel efficiency is becoming more important for all automakers, and Subaru has established some initiatives to improve the mileage of its models. A new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is on the way, and it will achieve 30 percent better gas mileage than the 2.5-liter four-cylinder that currently powers many Subarus, McHale said.

In a model like the Forester, which has a combined EPA rating of 23 mpg, that type of increase would result in a 30 mpg combined rating with the new engine and other fuel-saving technologies, such as continuously variable automatic transmissions. Further down the road, Subaru expects to launch its first hybrid in 2013 as a 2014 model.

Even though familiar Subaru models have undergone growth spurts in recent years, one of the automaker's upcoming models will be comparatively tiny. Subaru's version of the small sports car it's developing with Toyota ? it's been seen in Toyota guise as the FT-86 concept ? is set to arrive in 2012. McHale says the car is similar in size to the Mazda MX-5 Miata and will retain the rear-wheel-drive layout seen in the Toyota as opposed to Subaru's customary all-wheel drive.

Dave Mirra from BMX to WRX

HAVING ONE OF THE MOST RECOGNIZABLE NAMES IN SPORTS TODAY, BMX LEGEND DAVE MIRRA IS ADDING TO HIS REPERTOIRE BY TACKLING RALLY RACING. INVITED TO COMPETE IN BOTH BMX AND RALLY RACING AT X GAMES 14, MIRRA INCREASED HIS RECORD COUNT OF X GAMES MEDALS TO 23 BY TYING FOR BRONZE IN THE RALLY EVENT.

Dp53_profile_inline1

BMX bikers and almost anyone who follows sports have heard of Dave Mirra. Winning his first BMX competition at the age of 9 and turning pro in 1992 after graduation from high school, Mirra has been one of the undisputed leaders in BMX competition.

Mirra made his rally racing debut at the Rally of the Tall Pines, the final round of the 2007 Canadian Rally Championship, in which he drove a MONSTER Energy® Subaru Impreza rally car prepared by Vermont SportsCar. In 2008, Mirra has competed in most of the Rally America National Championship events in the #40 MONSTER Energy STI with co-driver Alex Kihurani. For X Games 14 Rally, he was chosen as an "at-large" entry.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

A couple of weeks after X Games 14, Drive Performance had an opportunity to ask Dave Mirra a few questions.

We'll start with the same question that everyone probably asks: It seems like the transition from BMX to rally would be difficult on a number of levels. What have been the most difficult aspects for you besides being asked the same question over and over?

The most difficult aspect has to be the amount of time to practice. Riding is very easy to practice on a day-to-day basis. To be a better rider, I rode every day. As we all know, seat time [in a rally car] is hard to come by due to the costs of operation. So, I would say that is the most difficult obstacle.

X Games 14 threw together both BMX and rally racing for you. In terms of logistics, the BMX superpark was right next to the Subaru Rally Team USA service area. What kind of adjustments did you have to make going from one to the other?

That was really easy to decide. I worked around rally practice. I was really looking forward to the opportunity to rally at X Games, and I wanted all the practice I could get.

Did you have an interest in cars or auto racing of any type prior to taking up rally?

I always had dreamed of this opportunity to drive. My first experience of racing was last year when I participated in the Long Beach Grand Prix celebrity race. I ended up taking first, and I was hooked on racing.

What started your interest in rally?

My interest in rally really started when Ken Block and I met up at Tim O'Neil's rally school. I didn't know what to expect. After four days at Tim's, I was hooked and wanted to rally.

I learned all the basics. They started us in front-wheel-drive cars, and then we moved into the all-wheel-drive cars.

On the fourth day, Ken arrived with the Vermont SportsCar guys and showed me what the open class car capabilities were.

Within the sport of rally racing, what do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy being at a rally. All of the drivers are super cool, and it's a very chill environment. On the racing side, the elements you endure to finish are ever changing and very challenging!

The toughest thing for me is staying focused. I always have to be pushing, or mentally I'll slow down and make mistakes that can cost you a finish.

What has been the most difficult part of the sport to learn? What was the easiest?

I would say the toughest part is trying to figure out how to react and not think too hard to stay on the road.

I've had a few offs that could have been prevented if I would have made the choice to keep the car on the road. My problem has been locking the brakes and having no chance to save it.

The easiest is getting on the airplane to go to a rally.

You've had the opportunity to drive in rallies in winter, spring, and summer in different parts of the country. Which is the most challenging?

Winter is the most challenging because the road surface is always changing. The grip is so unpredictable. After doing a few winter rallys and a few summer rallys, I'm really interested to see how I can adapt this time around. I have a better understanding of what the car can do, so it will be exciting.

I prefer summer and dry surfaces, because you're able to push a lot harder, and the conditions are much more predictable.

On the other hand the best thing about rally is adapting. I can't say there's any condition I don't like to drive in.

What do you think you bring to the sport of rally racing?

I'm not real sure how to answer this one, but I hope I can bring another exciting driver to the sport and my fans will show up and support rally in America.

What has rally racing given you?

Rally has given me the chance to meet new people and race cars.

For instance, I met John Cassidy at O'Neil's winter rally and kept in touch quite a bit. Great guy. It's really cool to see how much rally is a lifestyle for John.

Do you have a rally or auto-racing hero or mentor?

Ken and Travis [Pastrana] are amazing drivers. They're the closest I've been to any kind of auto racing. I'm really into rally, and they're the top drivers in America. Testing with them really helps. It's crazy when I'm out there pushing it and come back to compare times. I'm like, "Wow." I've got a ways to go!

Subaru Facebook Fans choose Make A Wish Charity

Fans select charity to join four other nonprofits anticipated to receive a collective $5 million in donations from Subaru through fourth-annual Share The Love event

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Sept. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. today announced its newest Share The Love charity beneficiary, the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

(Logo:  http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20080325/SUBARULOGO )

For the first time, Subaru invited Facebook fans to vote on a charitable organization for the automaker's fourth annual Share The Love event. After three weeks of voting, Facebook fans added the Make-A-Wish Foundation to a roster of charities anticipated to receive a collective $5 million in donations from Subaru. The Share The Love event, which donates $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold or leased from Nov. 19 through Jan. 3, has donated nearly $15 million to charitable causes since the program's inception three years ago. The other recipient organizations that will benefit from this year's program include American Forests, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), Meals On Wheels Association of America, and Special Olympics.

"At Subaru, we support causes that our owners are also passionate about. This year we took the Share The Love event a step further and asked our Facebook fans to decide which organization they'd like to add to the designated charities for this year's event. We're absolutely delighted to welcome the Make-A-Wish Foundation as the People's Choice to join our existing charities," said Brian Johnson, national advertising manager, Subaru of America, Inc.

Bringing the "power of love" to the people

Facebook community members were given the exclusive opportunity to vote for their favorite charity through the Subaru of America Facebook page from Aug. 25 through Sept. 15. During the three-week period, the Make-A-Wish Foundation received the most votes, making the organization the People's Choice for the added charity.

"A Make-A-Wish® experience has the power to make a child with a life-threatening medical condition stronger and more optimistic, and the 'Share The Love' event offers a meaningful way to support our efforts to grant every eligible child a wish," said David Williams, president and chief executive officer of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. "The Make-A-Wish Foundation thanks Subaru for this chance to make life better for more children and communities. We also are grateful for the incredible support that led to our selection."

2011 Share The Love Charitable Beneficiaries

With the addition of the newest charity, consumers who purchase or lease a Subaru vehicle during this year's event can designate the $250 Subaru donation to any of the following organizations:

  • American Forests: restores and protects rural and urban forests worldwide. It is the oldest national conservation nonprofit in the country and the only one focused exclusively on forests.
  • The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®): works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters across the country.
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation: grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. It has granted more than 200,000 wishes in the United States since 1980.
  • Meals On Wheels Association of America: provides national leadership to end senior hunger, offering home-delivered-meal services to people in need.
  • Special Olympics: provides year-round sports and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

"We're proud to host the Share The Love event and we're happy to donate to our customers' favorite causes. With their help, and when this year's event comes to a close, we anticipate that Subaru will have donated nearly $20 million to deserving charities over the last four years. It just shows how much the power of love can do," Johnson added.

Leave A Car . Take A Bike!

The Car Store Makes Going Green on the Go easy!

The next time you bring your car in for an oil change or service at The Car

Store you can ride off on a 24-speed Trek bicycle. We purchased two of the

bicycles (along with a couple of helmets) from Omer & Bob's Sports Shop in

Hanover, N.H., last spring and have been offering them as greener and

healthier alternative to "loaner" cars.

"As long as your car is here for service you can have the bike," explains Tom

Brouillet, our parts and service director. "All you need is to be 18, have a credit

card, ID and sign some paperwork and that's it. Everybody is going green

these days and the bikes are another part of our continuing effort to

encourage not only ourselves but also our customers to see the need to go

and be green. And it's just plain fun."

Tom brought the idea east after learning about it from a dealer in Montana

during a Subaru meeting last February. "The reaction has been great," he

said. "There was one time I saw a customer just standing there looking at the

bikes in the rack and I asked,

Do you want to use one? He said he was only here to have something small

done but I told him if he wanted to run a short errand or to get some exercise,

it would only take a second to fill out the paperwork and off he went."

For more information, visit www.wish.org.

"We are pleased to offer this opportunity to Subaru's online community," said Brian Johnson, National Advertising Manager for Subaru of America, Inc. "This lets our customers get directly involved with our partners and allows them to have a say in who Subaru partners with in this year's event."

Online voting runs from Aug. 25  ? Sep. 15 and will be hosted on the Subaru of America Facebook page. The charity that receives the most votes during that timeframe will be announced as the fifth charity partner of this year's Share The Love event. In addition, for the first 200,000 votes, Subaru will donate 10 cents per vote to the charity receiving the vote.

The 2012 Subaru XV which will be badged as the Impreza Outback in the United States, extracts its design cues from the XV Concept unveiled in Shanghai in April, a vehicle that was "favourably received globally thanks to its distinctive and trendy design which blend a crossover-like commanding silhouette and an urban friendly image into one harmonious and elegant package."

We'll be back with the official photos and details once the European spec 2012 Subaru XV gets unveiled on September 13th at 9.30 am.

New 'Box' Engine for the 2011 Subaru Forester

2011 Subaru Forester: New Engine, Improved Audio

A new engine and a few new features are what's new in the 2011 Subaru Forester. While the hot-selling compact crossover wagon isn't that much different from the 2010 model either inside or outside in appearance, all but the turbocharged Forester XT are significantly different under the hood, where a all-new version of Subaru's horizontally opposed ('flat' or 'boxer') four-cylinder engine provides power.

The new 2.5-liter DOHC boxer engine doesn't make significantly more power than the previous engine, but it does have improved fuel efficiency?up to ten percent better, Subaru has said, for this engine, which will be introduced eventually throughout the brand's lineup. The new engine has a lower-maintenance timing-chain system instead of timing belts, and Subaru will likely mate it with the brand's CVT automatic in upcoming applications, further improving fuel economy. EPA ratings are improved by about one mile per gallon in the new 2011 Forester, to 21 mpg city, 27 highway.

Otherwise the '11 Forester is little-changed. A new grille design has been introduced, and the instrument panel has been given a softer, textured material.
